Day 1 and 2 in Peru
We made it! We were so blessed on our way up. Our flights were only a little behind schedule. We left Miami an hour later than scheduled which was 1am Miami time, and we arrived in Peru at 5:20am Peru time, which is also Central time in the US. Some of us slept on the plane, but most didn't. I like the way that Steve put it: "I think I might have lost consciousness a couple of times, but I'm not sure you would call that sleep."Thank you for all of you who were praying for us to get through customs, we all had the green light!! Not one of our bags were searched!!! Nick from Camino de Vida met us at the airport with a large bus that we and all 33 + bags piled in to. Then he took us to his apartment where we unloaded everything and searched our bags to get some toys and medications for our outreach that same day. Then on to breakfast - that was good news for our stomachs!
After breakfast we went to meet up with the church that goes once a month to a community called Huachipa. They have been doing outreach here once a month for over a year. The poverty in this area is unimaginable to our minds. But the women here are tough and determined to provide a good life for their families. The men work in brick factories to provide what they can, but it is very hard work and they work all day. But the women are beautiful and their is joy in their face.
When we arrived we walked up and down the streets to tell people that we were here and what was going on. The picture is a few of us walking back to the meeting area. The community is built into the side of a mountain. There is dust EVERYWHERE. The church was also giving worm medicine to the children. This is the only church that the people have.
We are getting ready to go to church at Camino de Vida. More later!
